This paper examines DesiRulezNet, an online piracy and fan-subtitling ecosystem that circulated Hindi TV serials, and its effects on Indian television's distribution, fandom, and intellectual property regimes. I analyze the platform’s history, technical and social affordances (streaming, peer-to-peer sharing, user-submitted subtitles), motivations of users (access, language barriers, censorship circumvention), and industry responses (legal action, changes in licensing, official streaming services). Using mixed methods—digital ethnography of fan communities, content analysis of forum discussions and comments, and interviews with three industry stakeholders (a content rights lawyer, a TV producer, and a subtitle contributor)—the paper argues that DesiRulezNet both disrupted conventional distribution and contributed to transnational circulation and new fan practices, prompting shifts in how producers and platforms manage access and rights.
