While resetting the software counter gets your machine working immediately, remember that the physical ink pads do actually accumulate liquid waste. If you reset your printer multiple times across its lifespan without replacing or washing out the physical foam pads inside the base, physical ink will eventually overflow out of the bottom of the machine. Some Canon printers allow resetting via a modified printer driver and a series of button presses plus a USB command sent via a terminal. This is extremely model-specific and not recommended.

You likely ended up here because your Canon printer has stopped working and is displaying an error message or a flashing orange light. The most common cause is that the printer has stopped printing due to a "Waste Ink Absorber Full" error. The waste ink absorber is a sponge-like pad inside the printer designed to capture excess ink from cleaning cycles. Canon printers are programmed with a counter that tracks ink usage and shuts the printer down when a predetermined limit is reached, with error codes like 5B00, 5B01, P07, 1700, etc.. Resetting the counter tells the printer that the waste ink tank is clean and allows printing to resume.
