As one expert notes, earlier translators made "a fundamental error" by attempting to translate "word for word" from poetic Gurmukhi into English. A truly faithful translation must "convey the perfect and explicit meaning without any confusion or aberrations" rather than mechanically render each word.

The Guru Granth Sahib was compiled by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, in 1604. He gathered the hymns and teachings of the previous Sikh Gurus and other spiritual leaders, and added his own compositions. The scripture was then installed in the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, where it remains to this day. The Guru Granth Sahib consists of 1,430 pages, containing 5,987 verses, or shabads. The scripture begins with the Mul Mantra, or the Fundamental Prayer, which sets the tone for the rest of the scripture.
