The re-release of Resident Evil 3 is not an isolated event. It is a crucial piece of GOG's mission for game preservation. The project required building significant trust with Capcom, a major Japanese publisher not always known for being open to such initiatives.

However, there are trade-offs and legal/ethical questions. Official distribution of copyrighted games remains the rightsholder’s prerogative; unofficial releases—even when preserving or improving functionality—exist in a legal gray area and can undermine legitimate sales or restoration initiatives. Additionally, community builds vary in quality and safety: they may include unofficial patches, translations, or bundled third-party tools that change the original experience or introduce security risks. The journey to bring Resident Evil 3 back to modern PCs was not an easy one. When GOG initially approached Capcom about re-releasing the original PC ports of Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 , the publisher was hesitant. According to Marcin Paczynski, GOG’s senior business development manager, Capcom initially felt that their modern remakes were the definitive way to experience the games. “Capcom were like, ‘we have all of those remakes. It’s already the superior experience to those games’,” Paczynski recalled. “They didn’t really see the value in bringing back the vanilla versions. It took a lot of convincing that there is an audience that has a lot of memories about those games, and would love to experience exactly the same game again.”
